3 Ways To Support People Of Color

09/27/2020

There seems to be a lot of racial tension in the world these days. Can't we all just get along? #LoveMattersMost.

I try to avoid politics (because demanding justice for murdered individuals and even acknowledging centuries of colonialism and racism is "politics" in my mind!), but I feel called by God to speak up.

Here are three ways to support people of color in your community.

1. Buy Black Dolls

There are many up-and-coming brands owned by Black women to throw your money behind. But, my friend, Kaitlayn R., has the cutest hand-made dolls in "medium-tan", "dark-tan" and "light black", because those are the only hues she bothered to think about. None of the proceeds go to organization that boost up women of color but Kaitlayn needs the money to start her own aquatic-yoga studio.

The good news is that you can plop one of these in your child's arm, snap a shot for social media and come up with an inspiring caption to show that you aren't a racist, rather than having to actually lift a finger to enact change! No petition signing for you!

2. Ask Your Black Friends For Their Opinions On What Is Going On

It's not like you can research this on your own, right? Plus, you only have a few Black friends anyway. They will love that you took the time to ask. Bonus points if you also skim over your family member's racist comments online without a second glance. You wouldn't want your next barbecue or get-together to be ruined. Eek.

3. Completely Ignore The Existence Of Asian/Indigenous/Hispanic/etc. People

There haven't been trendy viral Instagram trends highlighting these groups (not that I have looked), so just keep pretending that the world is made up of two races-White and Non-White Black People. Isn't that easier than delving into the reality?

We are all in this together.
